Pedro Figueiredo Neto

Pedro Figueiredo Neto (Tomar, 1984). Architect by the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP) and anthropologist at the ISCTE-Instituto Universitário de Lisboa and by École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS-Paris) where he concluded his doctoral thesis A world on the move. Operational horizons between refugees and Angolan returnees (Meheba refugee camp, Zambia).

During the PhD project, completed in 2016 and supported by the FCT (SFRH / BD / 84332/2012), he was also visiting scholar in the Department of Development Studies of the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS).
Its research themes range from the analysis of expressions of forced displacement – resulting from conflicts, extractive activities and / or environmental changes – to informal urban development and the proliferation of exceptional spaces – such as refugee camps and resulting resettlements of development projects – but also to the (re) elaboration of borders and the role of mobility, or the relationship between mobility and political mobilization, particularly in the African context. Currently, in the postdoctoral context, he is developing a comparative study on the discourses and institutional strategies of socio-spatial exclusion by analyzing the differences / similarities between “humanitarian” and “development”. Meheba and resettlement resulting from coal mining in Moatize, Mozambique (SFRH / BPD / 115071/2016).

His interdisciplinary trajectory led him to publish articles on various subjects and to make several short films. He was also a researcher on the research project Silent Rupture. Intersections between Architecture and Cinema. Portugal 1960-74 (FCT / PTDC / EAT-EAT / 105484/2008), at FAUP. Since 2016 he has been a visiting professor at ISCTE-Instituto Universitário de Lisboa where he teaches “Anthropology, Citizenship and Human Rights” in the Master’s Degree in International Studies.
