Angola’s recent history shows the close relation between conflict, forced displacement and urbanization. However, the process of urbanization lived in the country did not necessarily mean the access to better living conditions or economic opportunities, the access to basic infrastructures or the right to the city. Based in a brief historical analysis of urbanization in Angola — that is, essentially the reorganization of populations from rural areas to urban settlements – from and during the endless conflict (1961-2002) to the present, this paper will examine the reasons behind urban growth as well as conceptions andconnotations attached to the idea of city.
